Throwback Thursdays presents: The Weeknd – What You Need
Since listening to “Tell Your Friends” yesterday, I’m really looking forward to Abel’s upcoming “Beauty Behind The Madness” project. I remember when I first heard his music; three tracks were released on YouTube, “The Morning” (originally released as a “Chopped & Screwed” record. I’ve still got a copy of it somewhere), “Loft Music“, and our #TBT record of the week, “What You Need“. Off 3 tracks, I was hooked, but any further searching into who The Weeknd was, led to dead ends. He remained an enigma to the music world, and that, along with the quality of the music, is what made him so appealing. Eventually, his first mixtape, “House Of Balloons” was released, to critical acclaim. It may have been unmastered, but it was one of the best mixtapes to have been released in a long while.
Although not an official single, “What You Need” is one of the first few tracks that introduced The Weeknd to the world, and from what it looks like, he’s sticking around for a long while. Sampling Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat“, the track was released back in December 2010. Listen to the record up top, and grab your pre-orders of “Beauty Behind The Madness” here if you haven’t already.
